The volunteer army

programpageA5

On Te Pae this Sunday 6pm and 12noon daily on your dial and at www.paekakariki.org.nz…after a stormy week that was also National Volunteer Week, we honour the army of people who give their time for nothing in the village. From the volunteer fire-fighters who mop up on wild nights, to all the people who help in school, the wider community and internationally.  The Beach Road Deli’s Kelly and Rebecca are Neighbours of the Week for Local Food Week – make sure you listen up for their top kitchen tips!  Will Northcott has a round-up of recent sporting highlights and his niece and new baby-sitter on the block Isabella Stroes reads the little ones a bed-time story. There’s in invite to be a Friend of Queen Elizabeth Park in the Squawk of the Week, and Wayne Mason’s blasting away the winter blues!

Community Notices as always at 1pm/7pm.

We welcome your notices, thoughts, ideas and comments to [email protected]. Te Pae/The Perch is presented by Mark Amery and Kaia Hawkins and produced by Melanie Phipps with assistance from Esther Bullen and Rebecca Thomson.

Te Pae is brought to you with the support of Beach Road Deli.

Dog poo all over Te Pae this week

programpageA5

Bet that title got your attention (and hope you like our new 11am-11pm schedule designed by Micky Finn). We’re nothing but groundbreaking here in Paekakariki. So groundbreaking this week on Te Pae (daily 12-2pm and 6-8pm) we may be the first radio show in the country ever to focus on doggy doings.

Yes. At least in the wider context of how we love our dogs but need to care for them and their travel through the village. Dogs in Paekakariki is our issue of the week about 6.30 (or 1.30 daytime) with Tilena Jackson (who has Woopy and Bootsy) Carmen Slater (Bart and Salty) and our reporter Gareth speaks to KCDC’s Environmental Standards Manager Nick Fowler.

Also on the show movie reviews from Gabe Bishop Evans, Squawk of the week: Anne Williams: President Whareroa Guardians Community Trust (a place where dogs and their scatterings are welcome), and Neighbour of the Week is Trevor Jennings, a big man with a big dog, living in the big house.  Our spoken word feature is Grace Wynne-Ewans class comedians stand-up turn at BATS Theatre Wellington a month ago.

Also to recommend our new Paekakariki School Show (Tuesdays 8pm, Thursdays 2pm) which this week features our youngest studio guests yet – the six year olds of Room 2 Paekakariki School (pictured) who were completely buzzed to read their stories and be interviewed by the senior students.

Just some things I loved I heard on a radio in Paekakariki this month

Screen Shot 2013-05-30 at 7.51.44 PM

(click on the pic to see the current schedule)
On Word Mercedes’ beautiful interview with poet Rob Hack about living here and her own long, long poem flickering out of my laptop for nigh on 20 minutes (Mondays 5-6pm)
Lily Fulton’s awesome live rendition of Stairway to Heaven near the end of Paekakariki Pop (Saturdays 5-6)
Sam Buchanan’s inspired set of stupid teenage songs on Reptile Radio (Saturdays 8-9), including, ridiculously, Zodiac Mindwarp and Captain Sensible singing Happy Talk live.
The slinkily sinuous jazzy grooves of the Ethiopian music on Tim Jaray’s Living the Highlife – talk about introducing treasure (Mondays 8-9pm)
MAWP actually making me like Oasis again (Fridays at 8pm) – the lads are still keeping what the initials MAWP really stand for close to their hunky chests…
The wonderful hour-long interview Mike Gibson has done with Riki Gooch in the newly christened Paekakariki FM Studio B in Wellington (Mondays 10-11).
Reporting from the radio station’s shower to literalise The Weather Girls’ show’s anthem ‘Its Raining Men’ (Sundays 9-10pm) – oh and special guest Ken Ring
Ed Morley Hall’s  comment on Parental Misguidance (Sundays 5-6pm) that his single of the week slot is for single people only
Himiona’s sublime two hour grooving set on Indigenz Session (Tuesday 9-11pm)
Jim Ebenhoh’s focus on post punk female groups on Anything Could Happen, in particular the banging wrapped extended mix of ‘Money’ (Monday’s 9-10pm)
From Dudley Benson to lots of Arvo Part, Anna Marie O’Brien’s focus on contemporary classical vocal music on Classical Futures (Wednesdays 9-11)
How could one not love someone drinking home-brew talking about home-brew whilst playing the blues, espescially when a show by Al Witham has such a clever title as The Witham and Brews (Wednesdays 8-9pm)
Oh but just a few of the things I loved you can hear in the next week or so before our news show start (June 9). So much I haven’t mentioned. You guys are amazing.
Got some inclusions? Your own blog even on what you’re hearing? Bring it on!
