Don Polly: Jazz LPs and deja vu
More than 60 years ago, Don Polly was spinning jazz LPs at an American naval radio station outside Manila in the Philippine Islands. His favourite artists at the time included Dave Brubeck, The Four Freshmen, Errol Garner, Ella Fitzgerald, June Christy – all names you’ve heard over Paekakariki FM.
Since then new names have been added: Charles Mingus, Village Vanguard, Eva Cassidy, Wynton Marsalis. “The basics of jazz haven’t changed,” says Don, “but the interpretation is always new.”
A retired journalist, probation-parole officer, and motor mechanic tutor, Don and family came to New Zealand in 1969. He has lived in Paekakariki for almost 30 years. For a great hour of jazz you can hear his show ‘Blues to Bop’, Wed 8pm & Fri 11am
