This week on Te Pae we speak live and direct to Elyse Robert from the Paekakariki Surf Club at the National Surf Championships at Ohope Beach, and part of the crew who are now National Open Women short course champions 2016.

In our main feature we welcome a special writer and community worker Queenie Rikihana Hyland of Ngati Raukawa to the station to tell the story of Kahe te Rau o te Rangi, famed for having swam from Kapiti Island to the mainland with her baby on her back to raise the alarm when Ngati Toa were under attack, but also later was the loved innkeeper at Paekakariki.

Finally we welcome Russell Thomas to fill us in on why he’s leaving Paekakariki for the Phillipines in the name of wind power.

Your hosts Mark Amery and Suzy Richardson. Thanks to the Beach Road Deli for their support. Listen to us 12 and 6pm daily at 88.2Fm and online at www.paekakariki.org.nz
