Te Pae for the week beginning 2 December 2018

Amelia and Sylvia talked with Mike Joy about his recent book and his environmental work, and with Jan Bolwell about the play she is directing, I’ll Tell You This For Nothing, Kate JasonSmith’s solo about her mother’s wartime experiences nursing in Europe. We also had community notices and talked about the Village displaying its own advent calendar.

Nov 25 Te Pae and all week

Amelia and Prue had fun with Dayll McCahon talking about her recent trip and biking in Europe and Korea, while Jon Trimmer and Mike Westrate discussed Community Open Day. They were particularly eloquent on the need to preserve the Holtom buildings and an application has just gone in for preservation status.

Nov 18 Te Pae (and all week)

Prue and Jane had 2 excellent chats – the first with Tash Nilsson about her neighbourhood Advent Calendar – offer your house for one day of the season – go visit them for displays. The second was with Paekakariki Community Board Chair, Phil Edwards about the upcoming (Nov 25th) Community Open Day at St Peters 10.30 to 3.30 – discuss all the current issues in Paekakariki

Wheeler’s Luck – Paekakariki 88.2FMs first playreading with the Scouts

Paekakariki Scouts are pleased to present in two parts a playreading with dodgy sound effects of Wheeler’s Luck, a great New Zealand play written by Toby Leach, Damon Andrews and Nigel Collins, which first premiered at Wellington’s BATS Theatre. Written for two actors (!) it proves brilliant for expanding to 25.

Read with the permission of Playmarket with apologies to the authors for any liberties taken. Cast and plot below.

The plot:

“Local landowner Nora Cox dies, leaving her prime coastal property to the people of the small coastal town of Bell End. Mayor Duncan attempts to keep the details of the town’s acquisition secret, inviting Auckland developer Richard Lush to help him transform the asset into a cash cow for the impoverished council. However, Nora’s land holds historical and cultural significance to the town as it was the site of a daring rescue following a shipwreck over 100 years ago…. When rural postie Murray learns what is afoot, he sets out to scupper the mayor’s plans. Murray’s interference leads to a town vote on the future of the land. It’s an emotional issue for the townsfolk, who commemorate the shipwreck and rescue with an annual bareback horse race across Nora’s land – an event which will be thrown into jeopardy should the development be given the green light. The vote results in a stalemate and Richard’s plans are stalled – until he places a wager on the upcoming race. He will ride against Murray. If Murray wins, Richard will leave town. If Richard wins, Murray will change his vote and the development will proceed. However, Richard has fallen for the local beauty – Murray’s step daughter, Trish. Will love conquer greed? And what will be become of Alan the crazed chicken farmer with a dangerous obsession with explosives?

Te Pae 21 to 26 October

Te Pae 21 to 26 October. Paul and Prue had three interesting guests – Andy McKay from Nga Uruora talked about their wonderful work trapping and tree planting etc and Val Little about the superb Rainbow Pride weekend which was half way through. Then Joe Buchanan talked about his Diatom Press which is doing wonderful prints of seaweeds, fish, poetry and much more and will be open at 34 Ocean Road during the Kapiti Arts Trail the next two weekends ( the Press and Alan Weipehana are the only Paekakariki artists represented so do support them). Listen 12 to 1 or 6 to 7 all week

Te Pae for the week of 14 October

Join Sylvia and Paul at noon and 6 this week for a chat with Jude Galtry from the Paekakariki Tennis Club and with Sue Hirst and Jane Cuming from Paekakariki’s Early Bird Toastmasters – plus the low down on what’s on in the Village and some new fabulous music from Anita Moa.

Te Pae March 18th

A hiccupy show but some splendid material. Amy Delahunty talked about the amazing rapid progress of Paekakariki Pops (see https://www.facebook.com/PaekakarikiPops/?ref=br_rs) while Paul Callister talked about how the process of disposing of surplus land when projects are finished (like parts of the Perkins farm) could be improved and allow better for community input (see his article on changes to the Public Works Act at http://pureadvantage.org/news/2018/02/15/is-it-time-to-update-the-public-works-act/
Hiccupy because Prue’s support person for the programme forgot to come and she’d never run the desk alone before – so apologies for the first 4 blank minutes and the odd accident – hopefully the great material made up for it!
