Appreciation – Steeleye Span
An hour dedicated to early British folk rock
An hour dedicated to early British folk rock
An hour’s selection – a complete joy to discover and share – of Joni Mitchell avoiding the ‘hits’ and instead dipping across albums and decades to reveal some astonishing inventiveness and singularity. Absent: material from the late 70s to early 90s, where selector Mark Amery, found very little that reached the standard in this hour. A second hour is planned.

There can be, I have found, few harder yet more enjoyable tasks in putting together an hour of radio than The Kinks. Selecting great songwriting and playing from 30 abundant years. Appreciation on Paekakariki 88.2FM avoids the two hours of hit records they created and instead dig deep into 16 of their 24 studio albums, beginning in 1964 and ending in 1994. Here’s the track listing and show below.

MCMC and Mark Amery present an hour of the astonishing hip-hop meets every genre under the Southern US sun of Outkast, swerving away from the hits until the very end. An introduction to one of the finest musical forces through the 90s and noughties.
As The Chills ride out on a NZ tour that brings them to Paekakariki for the first time, Appreciation on Paekakariki 88.2FM provides an hour of selections on audio demand running roughly chronological over 35 impressive melodic years. But rather than the ‘heavenly pop hits’ I dive deeper into the catalogue to expose the wealth and scope of Martin Phillipps’ songwriting and musical vision. Heavier on the ballads and the darker sense of haunting of the individual and society, as still beautifully expressed in their fine new album Silver Bullets. Apologies for the occasional desk cock-ups. Its live recorded radio from the Paekakariki School Murder House peeps! Mark Amery
