Appreciation – John Martyn

Such a beautiful hour of music. Eric Clapton was quoted as saying that John Martyn was, “so far ahead of everything, it’s almost inconceivable.” He began in the late 1960s as a folk singer, a friend of Nick Drake’s and as original to boot. His wild adventurous career saw him stretching those sounds into jazz and blues while on a path of selfdestruction. Awarded an OBE, he died in 2009. Here Mark Amery selects an impeccable far-reaching hour of emotional salves, recorded on the night of the Christchurch mosque shootings, March 2019.

A conversation with Don McGlashan

One quiet Thursday afternoon in October, as he prepared to play St Peter’s Mark Amery sat down with Don McGlashan over a cuppa and some Melting Moments baked by Ash at the Railway Station cafe Input to talk for an hour about songwriting, from Blam Blam Blam, Front Lawn, From Scratch Muttonbirds to his marvelous solo career.

And to accompany this, the music:

An hour of Don McGlashan, following our adage of ‘no hits no misses’ from Blam Blam Blam and Front Lawn through to Front Lawn, Muttonbirds and onto a rich solo career. We squeeze it into an hour. With Mark Amery. Apologies for the brief tech failure at the 3 minute mark.

Appreciation: Arthur Russell

I had always heard of New Yorker Arthur Russell but never listened to him so for this month’s musical Appreciation I took advice and started listening. The result was this really rewarding hour where experimental disco, meets ambient cello, meets pop meets alt country. A remarkable thing. Here it is as a podcast (the show airs 10pm Fridays, 9am Mondays)
