Appreciation – Split Enz

With Mark Amery. The band that defined my adolescence before The Beatles got hold of it. Following our adage of No Hits No Misses we miss out the dozen songs anyone between the ages of 30 and 60 know and provide one hour digging deep into all 10 albums of a restless adventurous band with impeccable songwriting and inventive musicality.

Appreciation – The 3Ds

NZ darlings the noise pop band that should have been as big as the Pixies and supported Nirvana et al the friggin The 3Ds, 1988-1996. Remarkable. On Appreciation a monthly dive into a backcatalogue of a great artist or group, with Mark Amery.

Appreciation – Elton John

This Month I have done something so you don’t have to: on behalf of the many bemused but exhausted by the schmaltz the ego the sentimentalism I have gone through 30 albums by Elton John, ignored the 30 or so bonafide top 20 hits, sludged through the albums of misses and identified a few hours of music that speaks to a fine musician and songwriter. On appreciation the best of Elton you don’t know – with the surprise being better albums in the 21st century than the 20th. Don’t shoot the piano player. Guaranteed to throw out a few surprises.

Appreciation – Linda Ronstadt

From the 60s Stone Poneys to some exquisite late duets with Emmylou Harris, an hour dedicated to one of the greatest song interpreters, the brave gusty singer Linda Rondstadt, whose fame might get in the way of you appreciating just how fine and diverse her work is. The latest monthly Appreciation show online with Mark Amery from Paekākāriki 88,2Fm with thanks to friend Helen Keivom for the inspiration.

Appreciation – Wilco

In our monthly cast dedicated to one artist with a rich backcatalogue to dive into Mark Amery play a song apiece at least from every Wilco album bar the first one. Wilco an American alt-country-rock-pop-experimental group with the most consistently strong back catalogue of any band of the last 20 years – or so Amery reckons.

Appreciation – Patti Smith

Horses! Horses! Fans from around the country have joined Paekākāriki 88.2FM to nominate their favourite songs by the punk poet priestess Patti Smith under the mission- no hits but no misses.
