Appreciation – John Martyn

Such a beautiful hour of music. Eric Clapton was quoted as saying that John Martyn was, “so far ahead of everything, it’s almost inconceivable.” He began in the late 1960s as a folk singer, a friend of Nick Drake’s and as original to boot. His wild adventurous career saw him stretching those sounds into jazz and blues while on a path of selfdestruction. Awarded an OBE, he died in 2009. Here Mark Amery selects an impeccable far-reaching hour of emotional salves, recorded on the night of the Christchurch mosque shootings, March 2019.
